Grayson, the leader, a Black human woman, once worked as an astronaut orbiting the earth. Meanwhile three bipeds, named Grayson, Chen, and Moss, wander the wilderness together looking for the City. As the technology shifts, the blue fox and his fellow questors struggle to determine how they literally transform in an unpredictable world built to be cryptic and sparse by design.Ī blue fox, never named, flits into the wilderness where he gathers like foxes and promises to make them mighty and save them from the machinations of humans, who have basically polluted this entire world. The mythic properties of these quests light up a tech-run world that has become completely alien from the humans who built it and cast bizarre shadows in the reader’s mind. Biotech monsters run rampant here as an apocalypse rages, but in the midst of it all, two separate quests intersect. This novel, set in the universe of his 2017 novel, Borne, is neither a sequel nor a prequel, just another story in the same neighborhood. Jeff VanderMeer’s newest novel, Dead Astronauts, is a machine designed to generate questions, not only about the effect of humans on nature, but on the cycle of evolution itself.

With the first book, all I wanted to read was Arlen. Now a full grown woman, she suffers that same fate as her sisters, at the hands of her father. Also, Renna Tanner, the girl Arlen kissed before leaving Tibbet’s Brook, is included. Breaks were laced throughout, switching between the present and past, as the Krasian’s sacked a city. Now a character perspective, the first 25% of the book covers is back story, starting from his youth, the training he survived, and eventual rise to power. The Desert Spear is some two hundred pages longer than The Warded Man, mostly due to the inclusion of Jardir. Though there’s some backtracking, describing everything that ever happened to a character, the whole is still far better than anything to do with thrones. With more characters added, the story becomes denser, introducing some multiple perspectives that add to tale. After a fantastic start in The Warded Man, The Desert Spear continues the story while fleshing out the world in the books. The Demon Cycle is the best series your not reading. I just wasn’t blown away, but to be fair, I was expecting the unreliability and twists of Gone Girl, the emotional resonance of The Girl on the Train and a big reveal to rival The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, so to be fair, my expectations were really high. The advance reading copy of The Couple Next Door began with an editor’s note that set up pretty high expectations:ĭid it meet the expectations? Not quite, but to be fair, it’s still a good, solid mystery with multiple twists.
